“Otters, Owls, and Other Stuff” with Kirk Gentalen
Otters, Owls and Other Stuff
For this presentation Gentalen will be sharing his favorite stories, photos and chuckles from his times exploring the island, as well as dishing out much appreciation and gratitude for the opportunities he offered.
Kirk Gentalen is the mid-coast Maine Regional Stewardship Manager for the Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT), with the Fox Islands and St. George peninsula being his ‘turf’. He writes a blog – Nature Bummin with Kirk Gentalen (mcht.org/story-tag/nature- bummin) and continues to steward MCHT’s Vinalhaven properties (as well as Lane’s Island). And he loves each and every ferry ride.
Poetry Reading with Paddy Noble and Patricia Sweeney
Join us at the library as we listen to two wonderful poets read from their work.
Paddy Noble is a year round resident of Vinalhaven. Published in numerous collections here and abroad she has won awards for her poetry over the last forty years. In the past she has done readings of her work on radio, local tv stations, at Universities and other venues. Her poetry can be found in our local paper, “The Wind”, and, when she can ‘sit still’, she is working on her third book of poetry.
Patricia Sweeney, a graduate of Rutgers University, has been friends with Paddy Noble for 40 years. In the past, in New York, they often read their poems together. Patricia grew up on a farm, which formed the basis of much of her poetry. She’s the author of “A Thousand Times & Other Poems”, by Canios Editions in NY. More recently, she is published in “Sufi Magazine”.
Author Visit: Carl & David Little
Carl and David Little will visit the library to talk about their book, “Art of Penobscot Bay”. Art from local artist, Elaine Crossman, is included in the book.

Harry Gratwick will visit the library to talk about the “World of Winslow Homer”. He has researched and prepared a presentation that will give insight into the life and art of Winslow Homer.
Fairy House Workshop CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER REPORT!!!!
Join Liza Gardner Walsh at the Vinalhaven Public Library on Saturday, August 10 at 10:30am for a Fairy House Workshop! Reading excerpts from the Fairy House Handbook, Liza will share what exactly is a fairy house, the rules of the forest, and tips on attracting fairies. This interactive program builds on children’s innate knowledge of fairies, nature and the fairy house world. Kids will create a collaborative fairy house.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go…When Exploring Family Secrets
When shocking DNA test results upended Vinalhaven resident Michelle Tullier’s sense of self, family, and home, she embarked on a journey to uncover the truth and reclaim her identity. Join us as Michelle recounts tales of her travels from the Louisiana bayous and Bible Belt to the South Carolina Low Country, tracing family footsteps against a backdrop of the Great Depression, WWII, racial segregation, and homophobia. Learn from her virtual travels back to the tragic 18th-century expulsion of Acadians from the Bay of Fundy, and hear about the surprising way her quest concluded at a revered Vinalhaven institution. With humor, poignant candor, photographs, and readings from her literary memoir No Finer Place, this promises to be an engaging and informative evening.

Join children’s author, Alexandra Hinrichs at the library for a story time and book signing, centered around her book, The Lobster Lady.
Maine Crime Writers: Kate Flora, Jule Selbo, and Maureen Milliken
Mystery Making: In this interactive workshop, three mystery authors representing different sub-genres, including cozy/traditional and thriller/suspense, will brainstorm on their feet to create a brand new mystery using suggestions provided by the audience. Fun, fast-paced, and fascinating, this improv game offers important insights into mystery writers’ minds and the conventions of the genre. They are a fun, engaging group and it should be a great program!

Roxana Robinson will visit the library to talk about her new book, “Leaving”.
Roxana Robinson is the author of eleven books—seven novels, three collections of short stories, and the biography of Georgia O’Keeffe. Four of these were chosen as New York Times Notable Books, two as New York Times Editors’ Choices.

Jessica Shattuck will visit the library to talk about her new book, “Last House”.
Jessica is the author of the novels Last House (publication summer of 2024), The Women in the Castle, a New York Times Bestseller and winner of The New England Book Award; Perfect Life; and The Hazards of Good Breeding, which was a New York Times Notable Book, a Boston Globe best book of the year, and a finalist for the 2003 PEN/Winship Award.
Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Glamour, Open City, and The Tampa Review among other publications.
Her other writing has appeared in The New York Times, Mother Jones, Wired, The Believer Magazine, and The Boston Globe.

Cloud Library is an online platform used by libraries in Maine as well as many other states to borrow eBooks and audiobooks. This free service allows you to choose from over 10,000 titles to view or listen to on your device. Learn how to download, navigate, and customize your Cloud Library.
Requirements for this class:
A device connected to the internet and an active library card with a participating library.
Class size limited to 10.
“iPhone Intermediate”
This course builds on the skills that are acquired in the iPhone Basics class. The primary focus of the Intermediate class is the exploration of the applications that Apple provides for free as part of the iOS. Applications such as Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages, FaceTime, and many others will be covered.
Requirements for this class:
An iPhone connected to the internet and completion of iPhone Basics or have equivalent knowledge.
This is a three class series. May 14, 15 and 16 at 11:30-12:30 in the Reading Room.

The Vinalhaven Public Library will be hosting Karen Coluzzi, state expert on slugs and snails. Find out how you can help document slugs and snails, and learn about the black slugs that inhabit our island.

Readings by Annie Penfield and Penny Guisinger
Come to Vinalhaven Public Library for an evening featuring readings from two writers!
Annie Penfield is a memoirist, and essayist and is currently shopping for a publisher for her memoire, Half Lives. Penny Guisinger is a non-fiction writer whose recently published the book, Shift. "Beginning her story as straight and ending as queer, she struggles to make sense of how her identity changed so profoundly while leaving her feeling like the same person she’s always been”. Penny lives in Downeast Maine.
The Aging Brain
ICMS and AgingME are bringing Dr. Susan Wehry to the Vinalhaven Public Library to talk about the aging brain and living with dementia.
“This presentation on the aging brain talks through ways you can stay healthy, reduce risk, and live well with dementia. Dr. Wehry will also overview 'dementia worry' or anxiety one might have about a dementia diagnosis. The talk is 45 minutes, with time at the end for discussion.
Susan Wehry, MD, is a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist with almost 40 years of experience. She is the director of AgingME, a Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), to create a more age-friendly health system.”
